Raf GUNS,Ronald ROUSSEAU

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2015, Volume 16, Issue 4,   Pages 311-320 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.1400425

Abstract: In some networks nodes belong to predefined groups (e.g., authors belong to institutions).former normalizes at the level of groups, the latter normalizes at the level of nodes. (2) Treating undirectednetworks as equivalent to symmetric directed networks, we expand the definition of gefura measures tothe directed case. (3) It is shown how Brandes’ algorithm for betweenness centrality can be adjusted

oocyst directed assembly of gold nanoparticles and graphene oxide

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2019, Volume 13, Issue 3,   Pages 608-615 doi: 10.1007/s11705-019-1813-4

Abstract: Understanding the interactions between inorganic nanomaterials and biological species is an important topic for surface and environmental chemistry. In this work, we systematically studied the oocysts of as a model protozoan parasite and its interaction with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and graphene oxide (GO). The as-prepared citrate-capped AuNPs adsorb strongly on the oocysts leading to a vivid color change. The adsorption of the AuNPs was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. Heat treatment fully inhibited the color change, indicating a large change of surface chemistry of the oocysts that can be probed by the AuNPs. Adding proteases such as trypsin and proteinase K partially inhibited the color change. DNA-capped AuNPs, on the other hand, could not be adsorbed by the oocysts. GO was found to wrap around the oocysts forming a conformal shell reflecting the shape of the oocysts. Both citrate-capped AuNPs and GO compromised the membrane integrity of the oocysts as indicated by the propidium iodide staining experiment, and they may be potentially used for inactivating the oocysts. This is the first example of using nanomaterials to probe the surface of the oocysts, and it suggests the possibility of using such organisms to template the assembly of nanomaterials.

Novel interpretable mechanism of neural networks based on network decoupling method

Frontiers of Engineering Management 2021, Volume 8, Issue 4,   Pages 572-581 doi: 10.1007/s42524-021-0169-x

Abstract: The lack of interpretability of the neural network algorithm has become the bottleneck of its wide application. We propose a general mathematical framework, which couples the complex structure of the system with the nonlinear activation function to explore the decoupled dimension reduction method of high-dimensional system and reveal the calculation mechanism of the neural network. We apply our framework to some network models and a real system of the whole neuron map of Caenorhabditis elegans. Result shows that a simple linear mapping relationship exists between network structure and network behavior in the neural network with high-dimensional and nonlinear characteristics. Our simulation and theoretical results fully demonstrate this interesting phenomenon. Our new interpretation mechanism provides not only the potential mathematical calculation principle of neural network but also an effective way to accurately match and predict human brain or animal activities, which can further expand and enrich the interpretable mechanism of artificial neural network in the future.

DNA alkylation promoted by an electron-rich quinone methide intermediate

Chengyun Huang,Steven E. Rokita

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2016, Volume 10, Issue 2,   Pages 213-221 doi: 10.1007/s11705-015-1541-3

Abstract: Biological application of conjugates derived from oligonucleotides and quinone methides have previously been limited by the slow exchange of their covalent self-adducts and subsequent alkylation of target nucleic acids. To enhance the rates of these processes, a new quinone methide precursor with an electron donating substituent has been prepared. Additionally, this substituent has been placed to the nascent -methylene group of the quinone methide for maximum effect. A conjugate made from this precursor and a 5'-aminohexyloligonucleotide accelerates formation of its reversible self-adduct and alkylation of its complementary DNA as predicted from prior model studies.
